Fight with Malnutrition

The children are getting ready for a mid-day meal in an Anganwadi center located in the remote tribal location of Dhamtari district in Chhatisgarh.

The state government opened Anganwadi centers on 16th September 2020                                                         after a long gap of 6 months, that too for just providing a hot cooked                                                                 nutritious meal to children and pregnant women. The decision of opening                                                           centers is obvious with the vulnerable conditions of the state in health and                                                           nutrition.

Chhatisgarh recorded the highest death rate of 7.5 in 2017 and has an                                                               infant mortality rate of 38. As per the comprehensive National Nutrition                                                               Survey 2016-18, Chhatisgarh ranked 26th in malnutrition ranking. The state                                                         also ranked 25th and 27th in overall child health ranking and iron deficiency                                                         ranking respectively.

But the efforts of the government seems to weaken as parents are not                                                               ready to send their children to the centers due to fear of COVID19 transmission. The AWW of the shown center also told that children won't be coming from tomorrow as parents are reluctant to send them. This center is not alone as the situation is the same at many Anganwadi centers across the state due to the increase in cases. Chhatisgarh recorded the fastest transmission rate in the state with a 700% rise in COVID19 cases last month with a deadly increase of 311% in the deceased population.

So, when the health and nutrition of the tribal community itself are becoming difficult to secure and spread of COVID19 cases are going beyond control then access to early childhood education and all-round development of children remains an elusive question here.
